Moves to make organic farming illegal in the US?

WTH, is there a move to make organic farming illegal? A US Congresswoman from Connecticut actually proposed a bill to make organic farming illegal.  HR 875 or Food Safety Modernization Act 2009 is a bill to outlaw organic farming. Organic farming is basically growing plants and vegetables using as natural methods as possible.

So what’s wrong with that??

I tell you what’s wrong. It’s wrong because if this bill were to be approved, it will put all our health a little more at RISK. Considering the amount of pesticides we take in on a daily basis, is it any wonder so many of us are ill or not really as healthy as we should be?

It will take away more of our rights and liberty, and what could be more rightful than the ability to plant and grow plants from seed using natural, time tested methods that our forefathers employed?

If it takes hold in the US, its effects are also going to be felt all around the world. More power to Big Corp and less to the man in the street. Yeah right, way to go. This is just getting way too much take….

Harassing farmers now, and paving the way for Genetically Modified Foods or GMO. Perhaps you want to ask what’s GMO next. If you only knew the potential health hazards of GMO…..

The buck has to stop.

  1. There appears to be much concern and some misinformation circulating on the Internet about several proposed pieces of federal legislation on food safety, including HR 875.

One fear being expressed by consumers about the bills now being proposed is that they will make it illegal to grow backyard gardens and will be the death of organic farming.

The fact is that there is no language to regulate, penalize or shut down backyard gardens, nor to stop organic farming. The proposed Food Safety Modernization Act only addresses food safety issues under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The National Organic Program is actually under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Each annual session of Congress, approximately 15,000 pieces of legislation are proposed on the federal level, with only 2 percent becoming law. Any legislation on food safety will take time. Thus, nothing will happen over night, and there will be a time and a place for public comment.

Nonetheless, the Organic Trade Assocation appreciates consumer concern and support for organic production and products and supports governmental action to address the safety of the U.S. food supply.
